When Should You Have a Tree Removed from Your Property?

By Nancy Penrose

As you probably already know, trees can provide several benefits to your home and property. They can add value to your home and they can also provide shade in the warmer months.

However, trees can also have their own risks. Eventually, all trees become too old or unsafe to be kept on your property. So, how can you know when it’s time to get a tree removed?

When you see something strange

If you start to notice something strange is happening to your tree, do not wait. Call an arborist immediately for them to take a look and identify the issue. They’ll be able to let you know what the best next step should be. Dying branches should be removed immediately because they can fall at any moment.

Examine the tree from afar

In order to see if there’s anything wrong with your tree in the first place, you’ll need to take a step back and look at the tree as a whole. Look out for any leaning that’s new (a leaning tree can be a sign that it’s dying), inspect the ground around the base of the tree as the roots can tell you a lot about the health of the tree. If the roots look damaged or look like they’re decaying, the tree has lost some structural support and has the potential of falling at any point. Finally, inspect the tree’s trunk. A crack in the trunk can indicate that a tree is no longer structurally sound.

At Big Trees, we will come out and inspect your tree to see if there are any signs of damage or decay. Just contact us today at (866) 313-2333 to get started.

Silva Construction Gives Tips to Homeowners on a 2nd Story Home Addition

SAN PEDRO, CA: Silva Construction, (https://www.silvaconstruction.com) a construction company, is offering to tips to homeowners who are interested in the possibility of a second story addition onto a one-story home.

Dave Silva, co-owner of Silva Construction, stated “Adding a second story or even a third story addition onto a one-story home can capture new views, which will increase the value along with maximizing square footage on a small lot. This type of project could require moving out of the house for the duration of the renovation but you’ll move back into a home that is twice the size. Here are some things to consider.”

  • Making it all work together. A good design will make your new second story look like it fits with the rest of the house.
  • Structural requirements. A second story will weigh much more than your old roof, so engineers will have to calculate how much weight the first-floor walls and the home’s foundation can carry and how to reinforce it to carry the new weight.
  • Stairs. A new staircase usually takes a bite out of your first-floor rooms. It takes good planning and design choice to minimize the bite.
  • Mechanical. When you increase the size of your home, you will have to re-evaluate the likely upgrade your furnace, water heater and electrical panel.
  • Chimneys. When you have a masonry chimney and add a story to your home, you will have to eliminate the chimney or build it up to above the new roof level.
  • Finishes. Often the style of your doors, trim, wall finish, and flooring, will dictate the finishes in the new story. But adding a new story allows you to change those things if you want.
  • Insulation. When engineering plans requires old siding to be removed from the exterior, it also gives you the chance to install new insulation, which is important because many older homes have poor insulation. And upgrading will give you better energy efficiency.”

The team at Silva Construction has done a number of second story addition projects, and can guide homeowners through the process.

David Clarke and Dave Silva are owners of Silva Construction, Inc., located in San Pedro, CA. The company has over 40 years of experience in remodeling construction, and serves Southern California’s South Bay area, including Westchester, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, San Pedro, Hermosa Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills, Harbor City, Lomita, Torrance, and other select areas. PEMF Therapy

A safe alternative method for dealing with anxiety & stress

by Larry Judge

Stress around work or school can lead to an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders have a complicated network of causes. Stress is defined as the body’s reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental and emotional responses. Stress is a normal part of life. You can experience stress from your environment, your body and your thoughts.

Stress is a process, not a diagnosis. When the term “stress” is used in a clinical sense, it refers to a situation that causes anxiety, discomfort and distress for a person. It can lead to other mental health problems like depression. Stress may also contribute to physical illness such as cardiovascular disease.

Anxiety and stress are non-discriminatory. It affects people regardless of their age, race, creed or background. The effects can be deadly and life altering at the least.

Anxiety and stress come in many different fashions. The way people deal with anxiety and stress vary as much as the clothes people wear.

People are looking for safer non-drug methods of handling and dealing with anxiety and stress.

One fascinating method is using PEMF Therapy. PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields. This process involves directing powerful, pulsed energy waves to different areas of a person’s body.

PEMF Therapy can alter anxiety and stress responses when used daily. It acts directly on the nervous system, glands, cells, tissues and organs. When used consistently, PEMF Therapy can bring about a state of relaxation while promoting numerous health benefits at the same time.

Dr. William Pawluk M.D., MSc a highly respected M.D. and expert in PEMF therapy, has written about the effects of stress and how PEMF therapy devices can be a great tool for helping those suffering from stress. (1)

Stress for long periods of time is unhealthy, and ultimately can cause other health conditions like high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke, and death in some cases.

There are numerous areas in which PEMF therapy can benefit immediately including:

1. Stimulating production of healthy blood cells, both red and white
2. Strengthening the immune system
3. Regulating cortisol, a hormone that can rapidly increase with stress and cause health problems
4. Increasing one’s sense of well-being

Long-term use of PEMF Therapy can help the body remodel tissues that tend to be hyper-reactive to chronic or acute stress. Over time, that tissue becomes less and less reactive.
The primary reason many use PEMF therapy is for relaxation. PEMF’s have been proven to bring the mind and body into a state of relaxation which also improves sleep. PEMF therapy may also prevent an imbalance in the immune system. This is possible because PEMF’s stimulate the cells.

When your cells are healthy, they’re in a state of homeostasis. When stress is ignited, the cells release hormones to help the body cope.

Results show that PEMF Therapy is a safe alternative for dealing with anxiety and stress.

Nutrition Response Testing® and ADHD

By Sarah Outlaw, MH, MASCN

As a Nutrition Response Testing practitioner, I have had so many dramatic results with children that have completely turned their health around. I have had some great results with Nutrition Response Testing and ADHD cases.

There was one specific case of a 12-year old boy who was diagnosed with ADHD. His teachers were very concerned because he was unable to sit still in class, his grades were slipping and he really disliked learning. His teachers encouraged his parents to have him put on medication. His parents refused and believed that there was a better solution.

They brought him to me instead hoping that I could help. Within minutes of analyzing his body using Nutrition Response Testing, I was able to find the root cause of his behavioral issues.

We put him on a small, whole food nutritional therapy program using a combination of whole food supplements from Standard Process. We also made a few simple dietary changes to correct the underlying causes of his inattention and lack of focus.

Within 5 weeks of being on his Nutrition Response Testing program, the teachers requested a meeting with his parents. The parents thought that something must be wrong and were worried they’d keep suggesting to get their son on medications.

It turned out to be the opposite. The parents were told, “We don’t know what you did but he is a different person. He actually sits in class and listens. He loves to learn now and is reading well. His grades are going up.”

The teachers assumed the parents had put their son on medications, but they hadn’t. They simply brought their son to me, we addressed all the underlying nutritional issues and now he is fine. He is a happy, healthy kid!

It’s been about a year and a half since the parents first brought him in to see me. He has done amazingly well this last school year. Here is a kid we saved from going onto psychotropic medication. We saved him from having to take ADHD medication and he is doing great! He gets to be a kid! A better version of himself, drug free! This is the power of Nutrition Response Testing. This is how we save the children and change the healthcare paradigm in this country.

Woman Finally Gets Pregnant After 17 Years of Trying

By Brad Kristiansen, DC

It was not uncommon for women to come to me after going through all the medical routes of trying to get pregnant with no luck. I would work with them using Nutrition Response Testing.

I remember one gal who was trying to get pregnant for 17 years without success. By the time she came into my practice, she had limited years left of being able to have children. That’s a finite window of time.

She had a special condition which in Nutrition Response Testing we call “blocked regulation.” This means her nervous system wouldn’t accept any form of help to benefit the body. It would just block it.

When I did my analysis, we found that the “blocked regulation” was due to some food sensitivities. That means that when a person eats a food they’re sensitive to, it sets up an inflammatory response. Depending on where the inflammatory response hits, it overrides that particular area of the body so it can’t function properly.

When a patient has a food sensitivity, I recommend they stop consuming so much of it and recommend nutritional assistance in the form of proper enzymes and digestive aids. This helps the body process those foods without going through all these adverse inflammatory reactions.

I recommended this woman stop eating the foods that she had a sensitivity to. I also recommended some nutritional supplements to help her body better deal with these sensitivities. Some hormone issues also showed up in my analysis, so I recommended some organic food supplements to assist her hormone system to rebalance itself.

Three weeks after being on a Nutrition Response Testing program, she came in and said, “Doc I’m pregnant.” That was after she hadn’t been able to get pregnant for 17 years! Next thing you know, she delivered healthy twins.

Little Girl with Autism Loves Nutrition Response Testing®

By Sarah Outlaw

As a Nutrition Response Testing® practitioner I see a wide variety of patients with many different health issues.

A couple of years ago I had a little girl with autism who was super afraid to even walk into our office. She was 5 years old when she started with us.

Her mom brought her in because she (the mom) was holistically oriented. The daughter had some physical issues pertaining to autism and her mom was trying to figure out ways to get her to come out of her shell and be more outgoing. Her mom knew there were some issues because the daughter would hold her ears and cry. She would hear noises and voices that weren’t there. She wouldn’t eat anything but meat. She was always horribly constipated which was one of the major reasons her mom brought her in.

I had to do my Nutrition Response Testing analysis really fast to find out what was going on because she didn’t like to be touched. She would get extremely agitated and upset. Using Nutrition Response Testing Test Kits we found immune challenges and some other “stressors” that are commonly found in autistic kids. We cleared everything out of her system one by one over the next few months.

On the second visit she came into the office and said, “Hi Sarah!” and gave me the biggest hug. Her mom was amazed because she typically wouldn’t talk or touch anyone. Her mother said she definitely wouldn’t normally talk to someone she didn’t know, but she looked me in the eye and said, “Hi Sarah” and gave me a big hug!

This little girl would sit in the waiting area and watch the videos that I have playing of Dr. Ulan teaching Nutrition Response Testing. Her mom would have to practically drag her out of the office because she wanted to sit there and listen. Her mother asked her, “Why do you like to see Miss Sarah so much?” She said, “Because Miss Sarah gives me magic beans.” I thought it was very funny that all the supplements I gave her were magic beans according to her.

I tested her for a couple of weeks and over time she would actually take my hand, put it on her face and just leave it there. That is coming from a little girl with autism that didn’t like to be touched. She loved coming in and knew what we were doing was helping her. She would jump on the table and let me test her. She was happy about it and we got really good results with her!

She is 8 years old now and doing really well on her maintenance program. What a privilege it is to provide hope to families with the incredible work that we do with Nutrition Response Testing!

Former “Sugarholic” Returns to Work After 10 Years

By Brad Kristiansen, DC

I had a woman patient with an extremely interesting situation. After being on a program with me for a while, she told me that if somebody hadn’t brought her into my office, she was thinking about driving her car into an oncoming semi-truck on the highway. Nobody would let her drive by herself because of this.

When I first saw her, she weighed about 300 pounds. She was under medical care because of her low white blood cell count. It was down to 500 and it should be around 5,000. Every two weeks she went to her medical doctor to get a shot to bring her white blood cell count back up. She was unable to work for the last 10 years because of this situation.

This woman told me that she could never drive past a Dairy Queen without stopping and getting at least one or two ice cream treats. She was what we call a “sugarholic.” If it had lots of sugar in it, she was going to eat it.

She actually looked like a walking water balloon. She looked inflated, puffy and had big bloodshot eyes. I would tap on her skin and see waves in the fluid.

I did my Nutrition Response Testing® analysis on her and determined that she was not a complicated case. She was a pretty standard case for Nutrition Response Testing. I found her to be “blocked,” which means her nervous system wouldn’t accept any form of help that would normally be beneficial to her. Her nervous system was just stuck in an incorrect type of functioning and couldn’t get out of it.

She also had a condition we call “switched.” “Switched” means her nervous system was not only blocked, but it was actually confused. Anything that would normally improve it would have the opposite effect.

I recommended supplements to get her unblocked and unswitched and gave her digestive enzymes to help her process the food she was eating. Within a month, she had lost about 50 pounds of fluid weight.

I couldn’t believe what she looked like just after four weeks of treatment. She brought me a picture of what she looked like before and it wasn’t even the same lady. Her skin color was so much better than it was when she first came in.

And after about 90 days of care, I saw her standing in my treatment room holding a piece of paper. I required my patients to lay on the table while waiting for me. If a patient was standing, I would pass by their room until they were lying down. I was seeing 17 patients an hour in my practice, so I didn’t have time to wait for them to lie down. I said, “You’re not laying on the table.” She just stood there and grinned at me the whole time, so I said, “What have you got there in your hand? Let me see that.” It was a prescription note from her oncologist where she was getting the shots for her white blood cell count. The note said that her white blood cell count was now normal and had been normal for the past three weeks. After 10 years of being unable to work, the oncologist said she could start working again!

Severe Mood Swings and Nutrition Response Testing®

By Brad Kristiansen, DC

I have been practicing Chiropractic for well over 50 years and have been fortunate enough to have been trained by the Founder of Nutrition Response Testing, Dr. Freddie Ulan. I have learned through the years of being a Nutrition Response Testing practitioner that we don’t handle a specific diagnosis. We follow the innate intelligence of the body and see where it leads.

A staff member of mine brought her 14-year-old daughter in to see me. Her daughter didn’t want to stop eating sugar, pizza, candy and cokes.

Just before coming to see me, the daughter’s mood altered for the worse. She was always angry.  She told me, “My stomach hurts all the time.” Her mood was so bad that 2 things happened.  First, she would get up in the middle of the night in a rage and go into her mother’s bedroom while she was sleeping. Second, she went to school and kicked one of her male classmates in the head, giving him a concussion.

I had a video that always played in my office called Pottenger’s Cats.  Dr. Pottenger did a study on 900 cats over 10 years. He discovered that the cats with horrible diets couldn’t have babies.  For this young lady, this is what turned the tide.

One day, she came into my office sobbing.  I said, “What’s going on?” She replied, “I watched that video and if I keep eating the way I’m eating, I’m never going to have babies. I want to have babies!” That’s when she started paying attention to me and following the program I put her on. She took the supplements that the usual Nutrition Response Testing procedures discovered her body was lacking and started cleaning up her diet. Her stomach pain went away and the sudden onset of anger disappeared! She eventually became my receptionist when she turned 18!

Here at Ulan Nutritional Systems, Inc. we have test kits to address the underlying causes.  These test kits can be used to help indicate the correct whole food supplements that will put the patient on the road to a happier and healthier life!

The FineCraft Experience

By Niko Papaheraklis

Nowadays, it really isn’t enough to just do a service and call it a day. Obviously, you want to make sure the service you provide is high quality, but in today’s world we owe it to our clients to be much more than just a service. That’s why at FineCraft, we work very hard to give our clients an experience that makes their entire process with us as enjoyable as possible. A few ways we do that include:

Time management

We respect our clients’ time. We know time is valuable and we work hard to make sure our time management is spot on. If we say a project will be done in ‘x’ weeks then it will be. We know that remodeling and construction may have a bit of a reputation for taking too long, so we really make it a point to always stick to our word and get projects done on time.

Keeping clients informed

We always aim to have a lot of communication with our clients. We want to keep the homeowners apprised of what’s going on at all times. This way, if for any reason we get a little behind on schedule or if a decision needs to be made, we let them know right away. This takes away surprises and gives the homeowner peace of mind about what is going on with their home.

At FineCraft Contractors, our clients are very important to us. We want to make sure they enjoy their experience and that they’re always in the know of what’s going on with their home. If you take a glance at our testimonials, you’ll see that our clients love working with us because of the experience we give them. At My Age Is It Really Even Worth Trying To Make Changes

By Cori Stern, DC

Being a Chiropractor that utilizes Nutrition Response Testing®, I get my share of geriatric patients who achieve miraculous results.  They sometimes don’t even tell me about their improvements right away.

Case in point was a woman in her early 80s who came in to see me. She had diabetes and other physical issues. She was on a few different medications at the time.  I did my initial Nutrition Response Testing examination and recommended a standard program using whole food supplements.  After 2-3 weeks on the program, she came in and said that she had a checkup with her primary care doctor.  He reduced all her medications by a third and took her completely off of 1 of them because her blood work looked so good. I told her that was good news and we’ll just keep working on her current program.

A week later she came in and said, “You know, I didn’t tell you this but I have macular degeneration.”   Macular degeneration is a condition where the vision degenerates. It can lead to blindness and often occurs in elderly people.

She said, “I’ve had this dark grey band in my vision and my ophthalmologist was giving me injections in my eyeballs. I got 6 injections and they were very painful. They didn’t help at all but the gray band is gone now. I didn’t even tell you that I had it.  Is there anything that you are giving me that would have helped with that?”

I looked at her program, thought about it and said, “Well, we recommended some zinc for your pancreas, but the eyes need zinc too. Maybe in theory you had a zinc deficiency that was causing or contributing to the diabetes and the macular degeneration and we addressed it.  It looks like everybody’s happy now, your eyes and your pancreas!”  She did so well on the program.  She lost some weight she wanted to lose and was feeling so much better.  The funny thing is when she first came in, she asked me, “At my age is it really even worth trying to make changes?  Do you think I can really improve at my age?”

I asked her the question that I often ask my senior patients, “How much longer would you like to live if you had a choice?” I get them to really think about that and whatever their answer is I say, “Do you want to live those years as healthy as you can be?  Because if you do, then there’s hope because we can actually help you with that!” That conversation helped her to make a firm decision to fully commit to the program and make whatever changes necessary to be as healthy as possible.

I had another interesting geriatric case. This was a woman who was 82 when she came to see me.  She was suffering from an inability to hold her head up – it was just hanging forward. Throughout the day, the weight of her head would just pull it down further.  Her head would go lower and lower to the point that she was literally walking and looking at the floor. She couldn’t look up and it was severely interfering with her ability to function.

This was a very active woman even at 82 years old.  She was very social.  She has a special needs granddaughter that she was taking care of, she ran several of the social groups in her senior development and she was still driving.  It was very distressing to her that she couldn’t stand up straight.  Not to mention, she was very careful with her appearance, always dressing in beautifully coordinated outfits and carefully applied makeup. She was embarrassed by her posture. She said, “This is not a good look for me!”

She had arthritis in her spine as well as osteoporosis.  She had multiple vertebral compression fractures causing a severely increased thoracic kyphosis or “hunchback”.

She had been suffering with this for over a year before coming to see me.  She had been to 8 different doctors.  Before arriving in my office, she was receiving botox injections in her neck, which didn’t help her at all.  They were painful and weren’t improving anything.  None of the doctors she had seen were able to help her.

I did her evaluation and found the “priority” organ, as we say in Nutrition Response Testing.  My evaluation indicated her thyroid as the priority needing help.  I recommended a program and within 3 weeks, she was able to hold her head up!  She kept asking me, “How did this happen?  How did you do this so fast?”  I told her, “I have no idea.  I can’t answer that.  We just use Nutrition Response Testing to find out what your body was missing, and I gave it to you!”  That was 7 years ago.  She is 89 now, still drives and lives her active life doing what she enjoys.

Over the past 7 years I have helped keep her health stable with whatever other issues she’s run into.  When she first came in, she had other conditions that needed to be addressed.  She had high blood pressure and hypothyroidism.  We have been able to keep her stable and improve her health throughout these past seven years.  She really hasn’t aged much in these seven years. She looks exactly the same.  She has a fully intact mind and is very full of life and energy.  She wants to live as long as she can because she wants to be to help her special needs granddaughter.

The goal I have for all my patients, no matter what their age is, is to grow healthier as they age. I always say, “You can be old and healthy at the same time!”
